After meeting with the visiting Japanese foreign minister on Sunday, Iran’s President Raisi called on Japan to release Iranian money blocked in Japan due to US sanctions, Iranian television reported. Due to US sanctions on Iran’s banking and energy sectors, it was unable to receive ten billion dollars from different entities, including $3 billion from Japan. The sanctions were reinstated in 2018 after Trump sabotage Tehran’s 2015 nuclear accord with six world powers. Donald Trump has also destroyed the detente between Iran and world powers once established by the nuclear deal in 2015.
“Iran wants to enhance ties with Japan. Any delay in unblocking Iranian assets in Japanese institutions is not supported,” Raisi said in a meeting with Toshimitsu Motegi in Tehran. Sanctions were reimposed on Iran under the CAATSA act. The Countering America’s Adversaries bill was inforced on June 15, 2017. Iran, North Korea, and Russia are countries affected by the CAATSA act.
