Pro-freedom leader and veteran politician Syed Ali Geelani dies at 92 in Srinagar.

According to media outlet reports  Syed Ali Shah Geelani passed away Wednesday night after a protracted illness. Indian authorities restricted him to Srinagar’s residence after the abolition of Kashmir’s special status in early August 2019. In other words, Geelani Sahab passed away during house arrest. Indian government kept him away from basic health and others facilities. Article 370 of the Indian constitution that allows special status to Jammu and Kashmir was scraped in 2019 by the Narendra Modi government.

As a Muslim leader, he always stood with Kashmiri Muslims in good and bad times. He led a hardline section of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), a separatist organization that opposes Indian rule in Kashmir and calls for Kashmir unification with Pakistan. There were two groups in Hurriyat Conference one headed by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and the second led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani. He was also a strong supporter of Kashmiris’ right to self-determination. Geelani Sahab was born on September 29, 1929, in Sopore, Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
