Iraqi security forces have apprehended a top member of the ISIL group who was a representative of the assassinated ISIL pioneer Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and operator of his monetary resources, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi said in a statement on Monday. Baghdadi, who proclaimed a cross-border “caliphate” in Syria and Iraq in 2014, was killed in a US attack in northwest Syria in 2019.
His top aide Sami Jasim was apprehended in Turkey during an operation conducted by Iraqi intelligence services., according to the Iraqi military media wing. He is also a close aide of the group’s commander, Abu Ibrahim al-Hashemi al-Quraishi, who announced himself as the successor of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Jasim is a member of ISIS’ highest leadership council, the delegated committee, which comprises between half a dozen or a dozen members, according to Hassan, author of an ISIS book and editor in chief of New Lines Magazine. The US State Department has offered a reward for information leading to the capture of ISIL commanders, including Jasim. A $5 million reward was placed on Sami Jasim’s head.
