France: 31, UK-bound migrants drowned in the deadliest ever tragedy, near the Calais coastline, after their boat sank on Thursday.
France, Calais (PNB NEWS). About 31 migrants trying to reach the UK perished when their boat capsized off Calais’s coast.
According to the media reports, the accident occurred at 1:30 p.m when an overloaded ferry boat overturned and capsized due to Severe weather at Calais coast.
One 1child, 5 women, among the 31 people, drowned near the Frans’s Calais city.
Calais is a city and significant ship port in northern France.
The migrants’ nationality was unknown at the time.
No other piece of information about the deceased was immediately released by the French govt.
“The wreck that happened in the Channel is a misfortune,” Jean Castex, the French prime minister, said on Twitter.
The incident happened days after French and British experts agreed to do more to reduce the incidence of people drowning in the sea.
A combined French-British salvage operation was underway in search of survivors on Wednesday night.
