A deadly fire broke out early Tuesday morning at the capital’s main prison, Gitega.
Witnesses told the media that they saw large flames emerge from the ground and fully engulf chunks of the jail complex.
The VP of Burundi, who headed a government delegation to the scene, expressed grief over the loss of valuable lives.
If the rescue squad had arrived sooner, the disaster would have been averted.
Firefighters arrived two hours after the fire broke, according to other witnesses.
After an initial inquiry, the cause of the catastrophe remains undetermined.
As per State TV, 20 men were severely hurt and dozens of others with superficial injuries were transported to a nearby hospital for adequate treatment.
No other piece of information about the victims was released immediately.
