Najaf, Iraq (PNB NEWS). The governor of Najaf province resigned on Friday a day after another governor resigned responding to uprisings against living conditions and corruption.

Luay al-Yasseri, the governor of Najaf in central Iraq, resigned a day after the governor of Nasiriyah province in the south stepped down after a violent crackdown on protests.

According to reports, Al-Sadr paid a public visit to the council in Najaf on Wednesday after “reports of corruption and deficiencies in this institution.

“We will work on dismissing the governor of Najaf and replacing him legally,” he said. Muqtada al-Sadr is a religious cleric, politician, and militia leader in Iraq.

He is also a leader of the Sadrist Movement and the Peace organization,  the successors to the “Mahdi Army,” a militia he led during the American military operation in Iraq.

“Governors’ exit highlights the issues facing war-torn Iraq, as well as almost how nothing has changed since protests arose in Baghdad and the south two years ago.

In the string of violent protests against the Iraqi govt in 2019-2021, hundreds of protestors were killed.

From 2019 to 2021, at least 1,100 protesters were killed, 5,000 were arrested, and nearly 40,000 were injured during the anti-corruption protests.
