The Brazilian Weather Forecasting and Natural Disaster Monitoring Agencies have issued a warning that additional landslides are possible in Bahia, with rain expected until Tuesday, Agência Brasil news agency reported.
It started raining for the next 48 hours, with no relief. The majority of states are visible up to 50 mm, although organic and remote locations can exceed 100 mm.
“It’s a terrible tragedy.” Given the number of cities and houses involved, I don’t recall seeing anything like this in Bahia’s recent history. “It’s pretty awful; so many houses and roads are completely flooded,” Governor Rui Costa said.
Heavy rains forced a dam to crumble late Saturday in the city of Itambe, sparking concerns of additional floods, media reports said.
The Brumadinho dam collapsed in Brazil in January 2019, killing nearly 270 people. Minas Gerais state’s city was the most affected region. Thousands of houses were destroyed and scores of people were displaced as a result of a flood, caused by the Brumadinho dam collapse.
