Local elections in the United Kingdom: Jhonson’s party defeated by Conservatives
London, (PNB NEWS). Labor seized control of Conservatives strongholds in London for the first time in decades, delivering a severe blow to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Early results also indicated that it suffered setbacks across England.
The British prime minister’s party has failed to cling to power in Wandsworth, the low-tax Conservative stronghold since 1978, reflecting voters’ outrage at the country’s cost-of-living crisis.
On Friday, preliminary results showed that the Conservatives had lost 92 council seats.
The Liberal Democrats won 42 seats, while the major opposition Labour Party gained 23.
This is the first electoral test for Johnson since he became the first UK Prime Minister to break the law while in office. Last month, he was fined for attending a birthday party at his office in 2020.
It was a violation of the rules of the social distance to curb the spread of coronavirus. The elections will decide nearly 7,000 council seats.
