44 inmates were killed in an Ecuador prison riot
Ecuador, (PNB NEWS). Officials in Ecuador claimed on Monday that clashes between rival gangs in prison had killed 44 men.
The government claimed that the majority of them were stabbed to death.
The two gangs clashed in a prison in the Ecuadorian city of Santo Domingo, according to police.
Police said the riot broke out after the gang leader was transferred to Bellavista Prison in Santo Domingo by court order, which could have sparked concern among the detainees.
AFP news agency reported that relatives of prisoners in the prison gathered outside the facility to try to get information.
According to Reuters, the country has been shocked by a new outbreak of prison violence.
During the rioting, 112 convicts attempted to escape but were apprehended by authorities.
In September 2021, in the Ecuadorian coastal city of Guayaquil, at least 100 people were killed and 52 more were injured in jail clashes.
The incident took place in the Ecuadorian coastal city of Guayaquil.
Last year, about 320 convicts died in riots in Ecuadorian prisons.
The government was obliged to proclaim a state of emergency as a result of the turmoil.
100s of police and military officers were dispatched to the jail.
Ecuador’s jail system comprises roughly 60 institutions with a capacity of 29,000 prisoners, but the prisons are congested due to overcrowding.
Overcrowding and a lack of staff in Ecuadorian prisons often resulted in such incidents.
